Great Explorations is always looking for creative, enthusiastic volunteers to join the team! From greeting visitors and helping them find the perfect play space to getting your groove on during one of our famous dance parties to working side by side with our gallery educators to make science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) come alive through our exciting educational programs, volunteers are an important part of the Great Ex team. But, volunteering at Great Ex isn’t just kids’ play – you’ll gain valuable experience in customer service, performance, education and more. Spots fill up quickly, so apply today!

Please note that volunteers must be at least 14 years old and pass a Florida Department of Law Enforcement criminal background screening.

Here’s how it works:

1.) APPLY. Click here for the Volunteer Application. Answer the questions (if you’re under 18, a parent or guardian will need to help) and then click submit.

2.) BACKGROUND SCREENING. You are responsible for the $24 fee for the required background screening.

You have several options for paying:

**Pay in the Great Ex Gift Shop during our normal operating hours. We accept cash, check or credit card. Don’t forget to tell the Visitor Services Staff the name of the potential volunteer you’re paying for.

**Mail a check made out to Great Explorations to ATTN:Lael Arango – Volunteer Director at 1925 4th Street North in St. Petersburg, FL 33704. Make sure to put the potential volunteer’s name on the Memo line.

**Click here to download the Payment Authorization and follow the instructions to submit payment.

The good news is, once you log 24 volunteers hours within 6 months of your first shift at Great Ex, we will reimburse you for the entire amount!

3.) APPLICATION REVIEW. Our staff will review your application, process your background screening and then contact you to schedule an orientation (the orientation counts towards the hours needed for reimbursement). We will also send you the paperwork needed to complete your application.

4.) ORIENTATION. At orientation, you’ll turn in your completed paperwork, get a tour of the museum, and come up with a schedule of how many hours you’ll be volunteering and when.

5.) THE FUN BEGINS! With all of that out of the way, you’ll start learning the ropes and having fun with our staff and our visitors.
